- In Wisconsin, the city of Shawano has passed an ordinance allowing police to fine parents if their child doesn’t stop their bullying behavior after a 90-day warning. The law compliments current Shawano School District policies that prohibit cyber-bullying.
- In Tennessee, the Knox County Schools taskforce on discipline announced its policy recommendations to reduce disparities in school discipline connected to race, income, disability, language or gender.
- In Idaho, the Idaho School Safety and Security Act goes into effect July 1. The law creates a new state department, The Office of School Safety and Security. The law stipulates that personnel from that office and other safety inspectors must regularly conduct safety and security assessments of schools.
- In California, a new study by researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) and Israel’s Bar Ilan University finds a correlation between student achievement and school safety. Schools that first raised academic performance usually got large reductions in school violence.
