- In an effort to deter crime and gang activity, Howard County, Maryland Police have operated this summer a mobile Community Athletic Program, staffed by school resource officers and other youth services officers. The mobile recreation center filled with sports gear, games and video game equipment and visits a different neighborhood each week.
- The Arlington, Texas school resource officers conducted week long Police Athletic League camps for middle schoolers and incoming high school freshmen throughout the summer.
- San Francisco’s new $7.9 billion budget sets aside funding to hire 300 more police officers, including school resource officers for the school safety.
- Marfa, Texas Independent School District eliminates policy of corporal punishment. Superintendent Andrew Peters told the board of trustees that other tools at the school’s disposal, such as the school resource officer, courts, and in-school suspension, were more effective.
- North Carolina has enacted House Bill 397 that allows gun owners with concealed-carry permits to store weapons in locked cars on the campus of any public school or university, or a state government parking lot. It is not popular with educators and law enforcement.
- This summer the San Joaquin County, CA Sherriff’s Department ran the Police Services’ Youth Police Academy for students from the 5th through 8th grade to show them what goes into emergency services and build relationships with the community.
