Safety Law News for 2/15/13

  • Indiana’s 2013 school safety legislation is approved in Senate Committee.  It provides funding for three things: (1) conduct threat assessments of school buildings, (2) purchase safety equipment and technology and (3) hire school resource officers.

Safety Law News 2/13/13

  • Wilson County, Tennessee School Board votes unanimously to pay for eight additional student resource officers so that all 19 of its schools would have a police presence.
  • Cleveland, Ohio school district to redesign main entrances to elementary schools to ensure optimal school security.  The remodeling projects will include a secure entrance with buzzer-locked doors.

Safety Law News for 2/11/13

  • Epping, New Hampshire voters overrule local leaders and vote to reinstate the school resource officer. Its three schools have been without a resource officer for about 10 years.
  •  The Delores County Colorado school board voted to have its high school principal and district superintendent double as security officers authorized to carry firearms with a pay raise of $1 apiece.

Safety Law News for 2/8/13

  • An adult trespasser was apprehended inside a Maryland high school by the school resource officer.  His home contained a stash of high-powered weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle and an Uzi carbine at home.
  •  Indiana Attorney General, Greg Zoeller promotes Senate Bill 1, which puts $10 million into a state safe schools fund, which could give districts 50 percent of the cost of school resource officer programs, capped at $50,000.
  •  Stockton, California High School student newspapers are confiscated by administrator over front page story; “Outdated safety plan leaves some wondering: exactly how safe is BC?”

Safety Law News for 2/6/13

  • Since Jan. 1, there have been at least 48 incidents nationwide in which guns have been discovered on students, in their bags, or in their lockers.  That works out to more than two gun reports a day this school year.
  • Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is urging state legislators to restore funding for school resource officers.
  •  School resource officers in Shenandoah County, Virginia teach anything from anti-drug classes in elementary schools to safe teen driving courses in high schools.

 

Safety Law News for 2/4/13

• Milford, CT Mayor favors the SRO model “where the police officers set an example for the students and they act as more of a counselor,” and pledges to provide school resource officers to schools.

• Woodstock, VA school resource officer says the most important part of the job is building trust and relationships with the school’s students.

• Newtown school board votes unanimously for more cops in schools.  Newtown PTA votes unanimously to request two resource officers for every school.

 Colorado State Senator Steve King introduces legislation that would include school resource officers as community partners in the Colorado Safe Schools Act.
